There’s been a rumor circulating that Research In Motion was planning to bring iPhone users into the world of BlackBerry Messaging with the release of an iOS BBM app near the end of April. It now looks like someone jumped the gun with April 1st pranks, as RIM has responded to the rumor by pointing out some serious holes in the claimed story behind the news.
The source that started the rumor, a new user to the MacRumors forums with only two posts to her name, claimed to have heard the news at a “Social Media conference today in Toronto” with RIM’s Jim Balsillie in attendance. Problem is, nothing about that checks out. BGR smelled something foul, so reached out to RIM to learn what the deal was. The company responded, “RIM did not hold a conference in Toronto this week, and Jim Balsillie did not speak at any event in Toronto this week.”
This isn’t to say that BBM will forever be a BlackBerry exclusive, as there have been earlier rumors about the possibility of Android and iPhone BBM clients, and RIM didn’t specifically deny any such project. As for an April 26 release, though, we give that about as much credence as the rest of the information this tipster made up.
