The “touch chip” in Sony’s Xperia X10 isn’t “fully capable” of multi-touch and pinch-to-zoom. Due to that fact, Sony has held the line that they won’t bring multi-touch to the Xperia X10. Of course that got Xperia owners upset and complaints began flowing in from customers. According to an article on the Sony Ericsson Blog, thanks to some pretty fancy coding magic engineers were “able to change the driver and firmware for the touch digitizer to make some multi-touch gestures work”, with a video to prove it!
That’s the good news. The bad news? First off, it has the same X-Y axis switching that the Nexus One (and similar phones) have. We’ve shown you this in videos in the past, and luckily, it doesn’t interfere with most general multi-touch operations.
More bad news? Sony doesn’t have it ready yet. You’ll have to wait for an upcoming update in Q1 of 2011. But is is coming.
