Back before MetroPCS even offered smartphones capable of operating on its LTE network, we heard about plans for the carrier introducing voice-over-LTE, or VoLTE service. Supposedly, the carrier was getting ready to give its LTE smartphones the option to use VoLTE from the moment they were released. Except, that didn’t end up happening when the Samsung Indulge ultimately launched. We then heard rumors that the first VoLTE model on the carrier might be one HTC was working on, but this was all the way back in February of last year, and nothing’s come of it since. So, what’s the deal with VoLTE on MetroPCS anyway? The latest word from the carrier, after all these delays, claims that VoLTE will finally be available in the second half of this year.

We’re pretty excited to start seeing some widespread use of VoLTE, as the technology should ultimately let carriers transition away from phones designed to use separate voice and data channels, freeing up the spectrum once reserved for voice calls. We should be seeing it from the likes of AT&T sometime next year, but for now we’re really just hoping for the ball to start rolling. It’s disappointing that MetroPCS has stumbled for as long as it has, but we’re hopeful that the eventual of arrival of VoLTE will have been worth waiting for.
