It wasn’t that long ago when the most recent Firefox Mobile beta releases were for version 4 of the mobile browser. Just a couple months later, 4 has hit its final release, and we’ve already got Firefox Mobile 5 beta releases to check out, thanks to Mozilla adding its most recent beta build to the Android Market.
While there’s not too much in the way of new features in this beta release, the collection of improvements and bug fixes means that even though this early beta is very much still an in-development build, you might want to take the time to try it out (at the least, to see how it fares against other mobile browsers). New to Firefox Mobile 5, you’ll find support for Do-Not-Track headers, letting web servers know you don’t want them following you around with cookies.
Top at the list of improvements from Firefox Mobile 4, Mozilla claims better page-load speeds, with specific optimizations for when you’re connected over a 3G network. Better color handling should make images and graphics display more accurately, and now those images you download will get added to your collection in the Android Gallery straight away. Changes to the finger-tracking code mean that kinetic panning is more responsive than it has been, making scrolling through long documents brisker.
The new beta is available now in the Android Market. You’ll need an Android running system software 2.x and having at least 512MB of RAM. There are specific issues with Galaxy S phones, the Nexus S, and some Motorola models, so check the release notes to avoid any surprises.
