Mozilla is not taking any breaks when it comes to development of Firefox for mobile devices, popping out its second major update within a month. The new beta 5 for Android and Maemo devices continues with the type of improvements we’ve seen in previous betas, granting even more speed boosts as well as greater stability.
The new beta should have speed-ups across the board; Mozilla points out the app starts-up faster than before, loads pages faster than ever, and has a higher-performance JavaScript interpreter. It also notes you should find the browser more responsive, and notice smoother scrolling.
If you’re low on internal phone storage and want the app installed on an SD card, this beta now has better support for profiles, moving ones it’s saved along with the app when transferring it to a flash card.
While Mozilla didn’t give any specific figures, it asserts that it has been working on making sure that Firefox beta 5 takes up as little system memory as possible. Release notes suggest a 512MB minimum.
You can try out the latest beta 5 yourself with a phone running Android 2.0 or higher, as well as with Maemo on the Nokia N900.
