Sprint’s not exactly known for its wide assortment of Motorola phones; right now, the only such smartphone on the network is the aging push-to-talk i1. We heard a rumor in April that the Atrix 4G might no longer be an AT&T exclusive in the States and be picked up by Sprint, as well. While nothing’s come of that as of yet, the newest twist on the rumor says that instead of the Atrix proper, Sprint could be getting another high-end Motorola Android, supposedly called the Photon 4G.

According to Phandroid, the Photon 4G will have a 4.3-inch qHD display, like the Droid X2. Along with a dual-core Tegra 2 processor and 4G WiMAX support, that would make for one heck of an upgrade over the Motorola i1. The site reports that the smartphone has been assigned model number MB855, and sure enough, at one point the Wi-Fi Alliance published a certification linking that model number to the name Photon 4G. It looks like that document has since been removed from the Alliance’s site, but the cat may already be out of the bag.

We don’t know what the source for this information is, so it’s hard to judge its credibility, but Phandroid reports that the Motorola Photon 4G may be ready to arrive at Sprint in as little as a month or two. We’ll be keeping a lookout for any new documentation that surfaces, hopefully giving us some more insight into this smartphone’s hardware.
