Last fall we started hearing about a new Droid model from Motorola, just a few months after the Droid 3 landed on Verizon. Despite that model’s recent introduction, it became clear that Motorola was pushing ahead with the Droid 4, and by February of this year, the Droid 4 was a reality, offering Verizon subscribers an LTE experience coupled with a hardware keyboard. Two months later, it’s nearly time for the phone’s first software update to arrive, delivering better battery life among other improvements.

The Droid 4 is among the models Verizon’s confirmed for receiving Ice Cream Sandwich updates, but just like the rest of the phones on that list, its day has yet to come. In the interim, you can look forward to this next maintenance update bringing that aforementioned improvement in battery life, along with fixes to keep the phone’s data connection working over WiFi, prevent slow-downs and full-on freeze-ups, and properly power-on.

Other changes in store for this update include modifications to the status tones the phone generates when using a Bluetooth headset, visual voicemail fixes, improved SMS performance, and modifications to the keyboard’s backlight behavior.
