Those who have been waiting patiently for yesterday’s announcement bringing the Droid 3 to Verizon’s line-up can be a bit bitter as it turns out the smartphone is shipping with a locked bootloader.
According to the Motorola Owners’ Forum Manager, the Droid 3 “does not have an unlocked bootloader”. With the entire recent buzz around Motorola and its bootloaders — the manufacturer promised unlocks as of late 2011 — we were expecting the Droid 3 to ship accordingly. Motorola reaffirmed its commitment to unlockable/relockable bootloaders but it appears that the Droid 3, along with other fresh Moto phones, will probably be unlocked later via a software update, or by the developers in the community.
