It’s been well over a year since Motorola released its Cliq 2 for T-Mobile, making it positively ancient in the fast-moving smartphone world. We heard back in February of this year that the Cliq 2 might be getting a bit of a new lease on life, with news of an upcoming Gingerbread update for the handset. Quality testing that update sure took some time, but nearly two-and-a-half months later it’s now time for that release to see the light of day, with the Cliq 2 finally making the jump to Android 2.3.
If you’re still rocking a Cliq 2 after all this time, you’re going to have to be proactive about making this upgrade; while it’s now all official, cleared by T-Mobile and all, it won’t be going out over the air. Instead, you’ll have to download the Motorola Software Update tool and hook your phone up to your PC for installation; unfortunately, we haven’t heard of any alternative for Linux or Mac users.
In addition to all the Gingerbread goodness, this update introduces a bunch of device-specific fixes. Motorola has resolved some bugs that were causing a battery-life hit, makes WiFi more reliable for both voice calls and hotspot mode, and claims you’ll experience a more stable, responsive user interface.
