A couple months back, we got a look at the Meizu MX. The phone was especially notable because while the 16GB version of the handset will have a dual-core processor, the 32GB model is on-track for being a quad-core device. While the MX’s release schedule has been pushed back a bit, the 16GB edition should still be out before the end of 2012. With time time starting to run out, the phone has popped-up in a couple new pictures, showing off some hardware changes.

As you can see, much of these photos has been edited out, presumably to protect the source’s privacy. Despite that, we can at least see the handset’s Android buttons, where there have been some modifications form earlier prototypes of the MX. The home button has been replaced with a translucent circular component. Those qualities have raised suspicion that we may be looking an optical trackpad. Comparing the two shots, you’ll notice that the other Android buttons are orientation-aware, and rotate as you move the phone. We’ve seen this trick before in phones like HTC’s Incredible S. While that smartphone used an array of tiny LEDs to form button images, the minimalist button design on the MX, consisting of just a few dots, looks especially conducive to carrying off this feat with a minimum of effort.

China is set to see the Meizu MX arrive next month, with the 16GB model costing in the mid-$500s.
