With the introduction of Ice Cream Sandwich came a truckload of features and improvements, some bringing functionality while others bringing visual appeal. The new, official ICS font will be Roboto, as Google drops the good old Droid font. Matias Duarte, Director of Android operating system User Experience, talks about the new font on his Google+ page.
Because ICS brings a higher resolution screen to the table, the old Droid font “struggled to achieve both the openness and information density we wanted in Ice Cream Sandwich”, so they’ve created Roboto. Not only it looks good on a high-resolution screen but the new typeface also plays nice with lower-spec’d devices that sport non-HD resolution screens.
Since ICS uses “Magazine UI” as its visual signature, Roboto became the clear choice with its “straight sided capitals and distinctive racetrack-shaped rounded letters”.
