The dual-core handset codenamed Star, and just revealed as the LG Optimus 2X, has passed the FCC on its way to retail. Unfortunately for Tegra-hungry Americans, this version of the so-called P990 looks to be solely a European-spec’ed device, although its support for AT&T 3G in the 1900MHz band means that importers can expect wireless broadband in some domestic markets.

With a dual-core Tegra 2 processor from Nvidia, the Optimus 2X has blown through initial benchmarks, creating quite a buzz surrounding the four-inch, Froyo-powered device. Expected to be one of Verizon’s first LTE-capable handsets, this model will likely be one of the first US phones capable of capturing 1080p video, a feat that we frankly thought would take a lot longer.

LG has been on a bit of a roll lately, finding success with its mid-range Optimus One Android smartphone — soon to offer rare four-carrier availability — as well as drawing attention to both the Optimus 2X as well as a bright, thin model simply known as “B” for now.
