Late last week, we learned of a comment made by LG that seemed to discount the possibility of bringing an Ice Cream Sandwich update to the dual-core Optimus 2X. While the statement itself was definitive enough, the circumstances surrounding it, including LG subsequently taking it down from Facebook, had us wishing the company would speak up and set the record straight, one way or the other. Now we’ve finally heard some follow-up comments from LG, painting the situation as not nearly so dire.
While LG had said previously “we will not be introducing Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich updates on LG Optimus 2X P990″, its tune now is similar to the wait-and-see comments we’ve heard from manufacturers like HTC. LG has stated that it’s currently testing Ice Cream Sandwich on both the Optimus 2X as well as the T-Mobile-branded G2x. Depending on the outcome of its tests, LG will ultimately decide the fate of updates for the smartphones.
It sounds like it will come down to a subjective assessment by LG, on whether or not the Ice Cream Sandwich user experience is retained when running the OS on Optimus 2X hardware. Just when that assessment will come, LG hasn’t said.
