As far as rumored releases go, this one certainly isn’t the most exciting, but we have it on pretty good authority that regional carrier Alltel will be launching the Android-powered LG Axis AS740 QWERTY slider (a.k.a. LG Ally on Verizon and LG Apex on US Cellular) — perhaps as early as this week. A quick search on Google does show a few products designated for the Alltel version of Axis (it’s currently sold by Cellular South and Cox Wireless in the US), adding some credibility to the report. No pricing information was given on the WVGA handset with 600MHz processor and 3.2-megapixel camera, although we’re told that unlike the other variants — and even prior Apex units — Alltel’s version will ship with Android 2.2 Froyo right out of the box.
Alltel currently offers a trio of Android handsets in the HTC Desire, Hero, and Wildfire, as well as quite a few BlackBerry models, plus some legacy devices like the Palm Treo Pro and HTC Snap.
