Last week, Swype updated its virtual keyboard software for Android to include a new skin and the ability to perform functions via gesture. Problem was, the release was positioned as an exclusive for the Nexus S 4G on Sprint. Those things never last, though, and now not only has that new Swype been extracted from the Nexus S for wider distribution, but the company revealed plans to officially get the software out to other Androids this week.

There was a brief period where you could easily download the new Swype and get it running on the rooted Android of your choice. The company quickly reacted to have links to the code taken down, so if you want to find it at this point, you’re on your own.

The good news is that it should only be a matter of days until you can access the new release on the up-and-up. If you’re a registered tester of the app, you should get access to it later this week. We’re hearing that it won’t have the black skin included in the Sprint version, but there’s a chance that custom skinning may be an option soon, making that exclusion a moot point.
