Are smartphones a “guy” thing? Granted, we’re all dudes here at Pocketnow, but we’re not exactly representative of the smartphone-buying public as a whole. Considering how much customization modern operating systems offer, it just seemed that, male or female, any potential smartphone customer would be able to find some hardware they liked and get the phone set up in a manner that suited their needs. Verizon and HTC may be thinking differently, as they’re reportedly working on an Android smartphone specifically geared towards women.
The rumor says that HTC has been talking to women to gauge what they like and dislike about smartphones, and has ended up with a muted green, accessory-laden Android called the HTC Bliss. The phone will supposedly be a standard HTC-looking slate with a rubberized back plate. The matched accessory set is what sounds really odd, including an illuminated charm tethered to the Bliss, glowing to signal alerts, and making the smartphone easier to yank out of a cluttered bag. Other options include a charging dock with an iPod-like speaker setup.
All of this sounds borderline offensive, especially if talk of pre-loaded shopping and exercise apps is true; you hardly see anyone making smartphones adorned with bottle openers and spikes to appeal to men. Frankly, it’s a bit much to swallow without anything in the way of confirmation, so we’ll leave this one in the rumor bin for now.
