Best Buy is taking pre-orders for the WiMAX-enabled Nexus S 4G coming to Sprint, but just when will the phone finally be available? We had seen some evidence pointing to April 18, but haven’t heard anything else to confirm that date. Now Best Buy had to go and get us hopeful about a possible release much earlier than we were expecting, updating its pre-order page to advise that the smartphone would start shipping on April 6, this coming Wednesday.
The retailer has since edited the page, going to back to a “Coming Soon” status, so now we’re stuck playing the was-that-a-leak-or-a-typo game.
We can understand going back to “Coming Soon” if, say, Best Buy had put April 18 up there by mistake; that’s far enough out that the company still might want to keep a lid on things until it had a better understanding of what stocks would be like. But April 6? If that really was the planned date to start sending out the pre-ordered phones, Best Buy wouldn’t be jumping the gun by publicizing it only a few days in advance.
Gut reaction? Don’t expect the Nexus S 4G this Thursday. That April 18 date may be a little off, too, but a release later this month seems a lot more likely than an earlier one.
