We know all too well how Instagram, already a smash hit on iOS, can quickly become a habit, tempting users into overdoing things with the app’s vintage photography effects. Show a little restraint, though, and it can be a useful tool for capturing just the right look. For the time being, only Apple users have access to the popular camera app, but that’s going to be changing in the near future. The team behind Instagram addressed the crowd at SXSW yesterday, teasing them with a phone running an in-development Android version of Instragram and claiming the app will be coming out soon.

It’s clear from the comments made that the Android version won’t be a perfect cookie-cutter copy of Instagram for iOS, as co-founder Kevin Systrom remarked that the Android edition is in some ways superior to what’s out now. We don’t know if that means new filters, or superior camera performance; we’ll have to wait until closer to the app’s release to get a look at it. For now, it’s getting there, but it’s reportedly still not quite walkthrough-ready.

For what it’s worth, the developers seem confident that waiting on an Android port was the way to go, discussing how concentrating just on iOS in the beginning let them dedicate more resources to working on the app’s functionality, rather than worrying about cross-platform support.

The Instagram for Android release date is still one big question mark at the moment, but we just might hear more as work on the app finishes up.
