Huawei’s Sonic is a Gingerbread-based Android first introduced to Turkey as a budget-priced smartphone. Since its debut, there have been hints that the phone might find a home on a US carrier someday, with expectations piqued after a version of the hardware with T-Mobile’s 3G band was discovered. Now the Sonic is back at the FCC with some yet-again revised hardware, now claiming frequency support for AT&T.
This Sonic model U8652 can do HSDPA on the 850, 1900, and 2100MHz bands. While that 2100 won’t see any use in North America, the inclusion of the other two definitely looks right for the geography. What it doesn’t do is help narrow the carrier down too much; though it screams “AT&T” if we’re looking at the Sonic coming to the States, those bands could point to any one of many Canadian carriers.
One sad note: it looks like this Huawei Sonic would be ditching the NFC support the original hardware included. Right now that’s not a huge deal at all, but who knows how much popularity NFC could gain by this time next year?
