Last week, we saw an update go out to owners of the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. By all accounts, it looked like a relatively minor maintenance update, containing what were described as security fixes and an improvement to power management. While users might have preferred a little Ice Cream Sandwich, it looked like a decent-enough update, well-worth installing. As it turns out, though, there was more to it than the release notes indicated, and that update serves as just one of many which will be performing the same job on the rest of HTC’s Sprint Android: removing Carrier IQ.

After Carrier IQ became public knowledge late last year, the subsequent backlash against the software led to some severed ties. We heard that Sprint was working to divorce itself of Carrier IQ, asking manufacturers to get it off their phones.

Once users noticed the recent EVO 3D update appeared to remove Carrier IQ, HTC was reached for comment. It responded, “HTC can confirm that we’re working with Sprint to provide maintenance releases that will remove Carrier IQ and provide security enhancements and bug fixes beginning in January.”
