HTC’s Chief Product Officer Kouji Kodera recently had the opportunity to talk a little bit about the future of the company’s Sense UI for its Android smartphones, highlighting some of the upcoming changes, including new functionality for the phone’s lock screen.

One of the lock screen customizations Kodera mentioned is the ability to display information like weather conditions, normally relegated to a home screen widget, directly on the lock screen. It looks like the sort of options that will be available will be those conveying small bits of up-to-the-minute data. Besides weather, think things like stock prices or sports scores.

Changes to the home screen will include an automatic slide-show option, as well as a focus on speeding up access to apps used for common tasks. We can also look forward to more situation-aware phone behavior, like sensing when it’s been laid face-down to silence the ringer, or detecting when it’s in a pocket or bag and increasing ring volume accordingly. Finally, if you regularly use your phone as a stand-in for a digital camera, you’ll be pleased to know that HTC is working on speeding up camera operation, hoping to cut down on the lag between pressing the shutter and snapping a shot.

The revamped Sense should first launch on the EVO 3D, and follow with HTC’s other models in the second half of the year.
