HTC reached out to a curious customer a few days ago, revealing in an email that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Thunderbolt would be forthcoming sometime during Q2. Apparently HTC was in a mood to keep up with these revelations to individual users, instead of issuing a formal statement, as the company has responded to a similar inquiry into the original Incredible, also putting it on track for a Q2 Gingerbread release.
Admittedly, both these statements, despite coming through official HTC channels, aren’t as reliable as a press release or statement attributable to an HTC exec. We’ve certainly seen individual employees get their facts wrong, exemplified by the all-too-regular overstatements or gaffes we read coming from companies’ Twitter accounts. There’s little to make us doubt these claims, though. Q2 is certainly broad enough to give customers a definitive answer without tying the company to what might become an untenable timeframe. We’re also finally starting to see Gingerbread updates begin to show up for other Android smartphones, and expect to see even more as we approach summer.
The HTC rep wrote “we expect to be ready to release it with Verizon before the end of the second quarter of this year“, making this update seem a little less ready than the Thunderbolt’s, which was revealed with a much more assertive statement. There could be the chance for an early Q3 release, instead, but it looks like HTC is banking on Q2 being most likely.
