Users of the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint should be keeping their eyes peeled for the availability of a new system update, which the carrier announced this afternoon via tweet.

Unfortunately, we’re not talking about Ice Cream Sandwich just yet; Sprint describes the release as a maintenance update. If you were expecting Android 4.0, we’d understand, since a supposed leak we looked at a few days ago indicated that HTC had been planning to get the phone’s update out before the end of last year. Would that have been true, we very well might have expected the delayed release to finally come out sometime around now, but that’s not the case; the leak has been confirmed as unofficial and invalid.

So what’s in this update, then? Nothing as exciting as Android 4.0, obviously. Sprint notes there are some more security improvements (the phone’s previous update consisted solely of such fixes), a reduction in power consumption that should manifest as increased battery life, and an update to the phone’s Peep client.
