According to the Android 2.3 User’s Guide, “Near Field Communication (NFC) is a technology for storing a small amount of information in a sticker or other small device, which you can scan at close range with an NFC reader. NFC tags can contain URLs, pictures, Maps locations, contacts, and many other kinds of information.”

If your Android-powered phone is running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and has an NFC chip installed, you can use a new app that comes with Gingerbread called Tags to open, act on, and organize the NFC tags that you’ve scanned.

Simply open the app, place your phone next to the tag, and the Tag app will scan the tag and send its contents to the screen. From there you can tap the tag’s information as it’s displayed on-screen to open it, or you can tap “Done” to save the tag and return to your previous screen, or “Delete” to remove the information.
