Bolehkah anda membantu saya dengan pencarian saya? If you’re a speaker of Malay, you’d recognize that request for help conducting a search. Now Google Voice Search will be up to the challenge, as the app has gained support for recognizing Indonesian, Malaysian, and Latin American Spanish speech.
Google’s developed the databases powering its speech-recognition engine with the help of some native speakers, their friends, and family. After finding a group to act as the nexus for this crowd-sourced project, those individuals gathered recordings of their associates in order to capture as much speech data as possible. By casting a wide net, Google was able to account for differences in local accents, increasing recognition accuracy.
Apparently the Latin American Spanish accents were particularly tricky, with wide variation between different populations of speakers. Google ended up collecting samples from Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia to understand as many pronunciations as possible.
Google Voice Search is a function of Google Search for the iPhone and BlackBerry devices, and a stand-alone app for Android.
