Google has tweeted out a photo of a tray full of gingerbread man cookies, a not-very-subtle reference to the next version of the Android operating system and a possible sign that its launch is imminent. In a message that went out an hour ago, the Google Mobile account hinted that “Our cafes are baking something sweet” along with a link to the image pictured above.
Lately there have been numerous rumors and hints that Android 2.3 Gingerbread would be coming soon, fueled mainly by a recent note to developers to prepare their Nexus Ones for the upgrade. Just yesterday, we saw the first pictures of the Google Nexus S, said to ship with Gingerbread perhaps before the end of the month.
Features that we’ve come to expect include hardware acceleration for improved gaming, deeper social networking integration, and native Google Voice support — plus, the UI is said to be getting more polish in the form of animations and revised icons. Keep a close eye on your RSS feeds, as there’s a good chance that we’ll be bringing you even more concrete details this weekend.
