Get ready for some big changes to Google’s Android Market; today the company revealed the all-new GUI headed to the Android Market smartphone app, giving you new ways to navigate through the store, discover content, compare apps, and make your purchases.
The new UI is a striking departure from what we’re used to, with some very Windows-Phone-7-Metro elements at play. Right off the bat, you’ll see a new focus on movies and books, in addition to apps. Once you pull up the apps directory, you’ll see a new space for promoted apps, and a swipe to the side will cycle through lists of all the top apps in various categories.
Google has repositioned some of the data on the details page for each app, in an effort to make purchases as quick and easy as possible, something developers should appreciate. There’s no denying this all looks really cool, but the big question is if it will translate into higher sales figures. The Android Market has gotten some flack for the effort required to track down an app you’re looking for; it will be too early to pass judgment until we get a chance to try it out, but it looks like this new Market could be a step in the right direction.
Google says that it’s already sending out update notifications to some users, and the rest of us (on Froyo or later) should be able to upgrade to the new Market in the next few weeks.
