By now you’ve probably heard that Google has launched an eBook platform that competes directly with Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and iBooks. With Google Books, there’s no dedicated reader like there is for Kindle or Nook. Instead, Google aims to make your books available from the cloud on a multitude of devices, similar to the Amazon approach. In this video we compare the Google Books experience with the Amazon Kindle app on Android. As you’ll see, both apps work in a similar way: you can pull books from the cloud that you’ve already bought or download. The reading experience is pretty much the same with controls for font type, size, and background color. Where Google Books excels, though, is in the slightly-better integration with its purchasing platform. That said, if you buy a Kindle book, you can only read it within the Kindle ecosystem. It’s much more closed. If you’re new to eBooks, we recommended that you consider going with Google Books for your digital book needs, as you’ll find in the long term that your library will be accessible from more devices.
