T-Mobile’s G2 has been going through a series of ups and downs over the past several weeks. Last month we had teases of an upcoming Gingerbread update along with ROM leaks, and then early this month we learned the smartphone was reaching end-of-life status. The tide turned again when T-Mobile starting returning serviced G2s to customers with Gingerbread already installed, making us think the public OTA release would be imminent. Then, not only did it turn out that the G2 had been full-on discontinued, but now we’ve learned that the clandestine Gingerbread distribution was just one big mistake.

An internal T-Mobile memo warns employees about G2 users who, after hearing the earlier news, might be seeking out unnecessary warranty work on their smartphones in order to see if they come back with Gingerbread installed. Apparently, those G2 users who got Gingerbread were the exceptions, rather than the rule, and the company’s put a stop to it after it realized what was happening.

Worse news yet: the memo refers to the Gingerbread that was on those phones as a test build, making us think that there’s still a bit of a wait in store before the update is finalized and ready for distribution. We keep hearing it will be here “soon”; let’s set a release date, already!
