Little by little, carriers continue to push out updates to those Android models that have yet to make the jump to Froyo. While we anxiously await Android 2.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich?), and with Gingerbread still a rarity, many of us are still hanging onto phones running older editions of Google’s operating system. Owners of the myTouch 3G, its Fender Limited Edition, and soon the Samsung Fascinate, are joining the world of Android 2.2 with newly-available updates.
T-Mobile is sending out Froyo to the myTouches, bringing them up to Android 2.2.1. The OTA update that has just started going out is reaching the Fender Limited Edition as well as the redesigned myTouch 3G with the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. We caught wind of the updates a couple weeks ago, and it looks like they’re successfully making their way to the phones. T-Mobile plans to complete updating the models by the end of the month.
While it’s not a nice OTA update, owners of the Samsung Fascinate may soon be able to flash their phones to Android 2.2 thanks to a leaked ROM. The Fascinate got Froyo on Telus near the end of last year, and with the source code available, it was only a matter of time before a version popped up for Verizon users in the States. It looks like Verizon may have beaten the hackers to it, as a tweet now brags that a leaked version – presumably of the official update from Verizon and Samsung – is making the rounds. Things like this don’t stay secret for long, so look for a ROM to pop up in the next several days.
