The Samsung-made Google Nexus S may not be top-tier hardware any longer, but it still holds a special place in the Android lineup as the flagship Gingerbread device. As a result, it’s usually first in line for new software revisions, which have brought additional features like Google Talk video chat. Despite being at the forefront for these kinds of updates, there’s been some stagnation when it comes to getting more routine updates to the device, like bugfixes. There’s been one annoying voice search bug that’s gone uncorrected for months, but Google looks like it will finally be addressing the glitch, announcing plans to get an update out this week.

The bug seems to affect the 850/1900/2100 MHz Nexus S, offered in Canada and on AT&T in the States. Apparently, the voice search functionality gets stuck “on” somehow, or will spontaneously activate without user intervention. Reports indicate that the problem has been showing up since at least May. Some users had success by manually turning off 3G, but that was a stopgap measure at best.

A Google employee has confirmed in one of the company’s support forums that the fix is now ready and coming via OTA update. Exactly when that will start tolling out wasn’t revealed, but it should be sometime this week. Better late than never, we suppose, but we’ve got to wonder why it took so long in the first place.
