After aborting the Droid Charge’s launch at the last minute, Verizon’s been dragging its feet about finally getting the smartphone off the ground. Retailers seemed confused about what to do, as evidenced by the leaked Costco documents we’ve seen, reflecting an ever-changing release schedule, reports of delays, and uncertainty as to Verizon’s plans. It should be no surprise, then, that we’re hearing reports of Best Buy stores going ahead with Droid Charge sales ahead of schedule.
With inventories already in place at retailers, it’s easy to imagine any number of situations where one of these LTE Androids got sold pre-release. Employees may be confused about an original launch date that already passed, customers asking about the smartphone like it’s already out, or conflicting information from superiors, especially when they’re receiving news that’s changing on a daily basis.
After buying the phone, users have successfully activated the Charge, so there’s not apparently any block on Verizon’s end. So far, some stores seem to have their games together and are still towing the Verizon line, while others seem to not even realize they’re doing anything wrong, bragging over the phone about how many Charges they have left in stock. If you’re set on picking one up right now, you may want to try your luck with several stores, both calling and going in person, to see if you can’t come across the right employee to help you out.
