Up until last week, things were looking good for the prospect of a Motorola Droid 4 launch on December 22. As the days counting-down to that expected launch grew shorter, speculation started to build that the anticipated date would be missed, and that we might not get a chance to see the phone until sometime in February. Sure enough, the lid has been kept on the Droid 4, with no comment coming from Verizon. Just how close were we to the possibility of the phone’s release, before plans changed? Some more Droid 4-related marketing materials have emerged, painting the picture of a smartphone that was for all appearances ready-to-launch.
First up, there’s the discovery of a series of voice-overs prepared for the Droid 4 online promotions, possibly meant for the DroidDoes site where we uncovered a spec sheet for the smartphone earlier this month. Out of context, and without the animations that surely accompany them, they’re not that interesting on their own, but they certainly speak to a marketing campaign for the phone that was all ready to go, should launch plans have stayed targeted on December.
Then there’s the case of Best Buy, which is currently using an image of the handset on its Reward Zone site. With its new angled corners and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the phone on display is unquestionably the Droid 4. Best Buy seems to have been expecting the phone to be out by now, and likely ran the image anyway as an oversight.
