A little under a year ago, we saw Samsung apply for trademark protection on a couple dozen smartphone names, including a whole bunch we were unfamiliar with at the time. Since then, some have manifested themselves as released handsets, and today the latest of those names becomes a real phone, with the announcement of the Samsung Transfix on Cricket.

The Transfix should remind you straight away of the Samsung Transform Ultra, which just launched with Boost Mobile. Under the hood, the Transfix and the Transform seem to be the same hardware, but there are a few changes outside. The keyboard arrangement of the Transfix manages to cram in a row of number keys by moving some letters down to the same row as the spacebar. While the Transform had hardware Android buttons, the Transfix uses capacitive elements.

A mid-tier messaging phone, the Transfix is powered by an 800MHz processor, has a 3.2-megapixel camera, a 3.2-inch display, and arrives running Gingerbread.

The main competition for the Transfix on Cricket is likely to be its only other QWERTY Android, the Samsung Indulge. The Indulge will give you a slightly-faster processor and larger screen, but it costs over $300; you can find the Transfix on Cricket’s website for just about $160.
