Especially if you’re not protecting your smartphone with a case, having a screen covered with Gorilla Glass can mean the difference between a usable phone and a very expensive reminder to be more careful with your things. We continue to hear about new phones equipped with this protective measure all the time, and it’s understandably tricky to remember which phones have it and which don’t. Manufacturer Corning recently went to Twitter to set the record straight in one case, confirming that Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus will not be using the glass for extra protection.
Gorilla Glass is treated during manufacturing to arrest the formation and spread of damage to the glass. That way, tiny scratches don’t end up becoming full-blown cracks.
Recent announcements of phones featuring Gorilla Glass include Motorola’s Admiral and Droid RAZR, but what about the Galaxy Nexus? There’s been no claims from official sources that the phone would feature the glass, but apparently, a flyer had mistakenly claimed that it would, starting the rumor spreading. After Corning started getting asked about it, it decided to be proactive and make today’s statement.
Just remember, Gorilla Glass is but one trademarked process for making damage-resistant smartphone screens, and its absence from the Galaxy Nexus is no reason to think the phone will be noticeably less durable.
