If you’re an Android user with simple tastes, Motorola’s Triumph on Virgin Mobile probably caught your eye, with its plain-vanilla Android implementation, straightforward design, and no-contract pricing. We had been anticipating the Triumph for tomorrow, July 19, but as is all too common amongst smartphone releases, the situation is just slightly more complicated.
In a press release last week, Virgin announced that the Triumph would not be available on July 19, but on July 20, instead. This is very important when you look at the main focus of that press release, Virgin’s new rate hikes that go into effect on July 20. If you sign-on for service before the cut-off, you can continue to enjoy the old rates.
So you’re out of luck for getting a Triumph with the cheaper rates, right? Far from it. Apparently Best Buy, a Virgin Mobile retail partner, isn’t too concerned with the smartphone’s official release date, and has been selling them as of today. You may not have luck at all stores, and activation can still be tricky, but there are enough reports of success that you stand a fighting chance. $300, and you can score a Triumph just before the new Virgin Mobile plan rates take effect.
