With a data-connected device once has to wonder why we’re still using SMS text messaging. Instant messaging is available on substantially more devices, and most don’t have that pesky character limit. Not only that, if you’re one of the unfortunate who have to pay per text (like me), instant messaging is a viable and free alternative.

Google Talk is one of my favorites, but there are still friends of mine who use MSN Messenger, and even one guy I know that uses AIM.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many good options for a multi-service IM client, and getting a separate app for each IM service you use seems a bit redundant. That’s where Beejive comes in to play. BGR has been using a beta version for the last few weeks, and is pretty impressed with the result. In addition to being stable and reliable, the app is reportedly very intuitive. Additionally, if you’re on an Android 2.2 device, you’ll also benefit from push-notifications (a big battery saver).

Beejive has been available for other platforms for some time now, but should be making its Android debut sometime later today (if schedules hold). True to its siblings, Beejive for Android should run US$9.99 when it makes it to Market.
