Amazon kicked of its Appstore earlier this week, giving Android users a major-name alternative to Google’s Android Market. Well, most Android users, anyway, as AT&T subscribers may have noticed that the Amazon Appstore falls under the carrier’s prohibition of sideloaded apps. Luckily, this block looks like it will only be temporary, as AT&T has announced that it’s working on changes to let its users access Amazon’s store.
AT&T has set up a website where you can register to receive email updates when the company makes progress on granting Amazon the access it needs. We’re a bit concerned, though, with how the network will go about fixing the problem. It would presumably need to prepare workarounds for all of its phones separately; right now the notification site asks you to choose your smartphone model from a drop-box, but only lists the Atrix, Inspire, Aria, and Captivate. Does that mean that X10 or Flipout users will be left stuck with only the Android Market to use? The company does provide an “other” option, but why not at least list all the Android models it’s currently selling? We’ll have to wait and see if anyone gets left behind.
