Earlier this week, a leaked AT&T internal screenshot gave us an idea of what the carrier had in store for the future of non-Market apps on its Android smartphones. Now AT&T has confirmed its plans, informing developers that all future Androids will support “unknown sources” installs, as well as many of the carrier’s currently-available Androids.

Members of AT&T’s Developer Program received the notification yesterday, affirming that the roll-out of this ability will start with the Samsung Infuse 4G. In a statement to the press, an AT&T representative said, besides adding support for sideloading to upcoming smartphones, “over the next few weeks, we will also roll out this capability to existing devices in our base for which an upgrade is possible.” The company didn’t expand then on which Androids meet that compatibility cut-off, but the leaked screenshot (which has been backed-up so far by everything AT&T’s stated) says that Froyo is the key, and that Androids that are still officially running Eclair will be left without an official sideloading solution.

Supposedly, the HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Aria, and Samsung Captivate will be the first of the existing AT&T Androids to be updated per this new policy. If you’ve got one of those models, let us know if you see signs of the OTA update, which we expect to be arriving any time now.
