ASUS has been talking about its Padfone since last spring, an innovative hybrid design that docks a smartphone into a matching tablet. Since we saw those early prototypes, ASUS has been hard at work finalizing the pair, and today revealed the fruits of its efforts.

The Padfone system consists of a 4.3-inch Android smartphone and a 10.1-inch tablet. We had heard rumors that the phone may feature a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, but instead ASUS has elected to use a dual-core component. Luckily, it’s one of the new S4 Snapdragons we recently saw benchmarked, which should give even quad-core chips a run for their money.

The phone part of the Padfone has a Super AMOLED qHD display, eight-megapixel main camera, VGA-quality front-facer, and features a 1,520mAh battery.

Slide the phone into the tablet, and you step up to a 10.1-inch 1280×800 display, along with augmenting the phone’s battery. Clipping-on the Padfone’s keyboard accessory further expands the hardware’s flexibility and adds even more battery power.

Look for both an HSPA+ and an LTE version of the Padfone to arrive later this year; the HSPA+ edition will be here as soon as April.
