We’ve been hearing of a “Google Nexus” tablet for quite some time and recent rumors seem to talk about Asus as the hardware manufacturer for the first “pure Android” slate — the Motorola and its Xoom model were the partners for the Android 3.0 Honeycomb launch.

The seven-inch Android tablet — probably a direct competitor at the Kindle Fire, one of the best-selling Google-powered slates — reportedly made by Asus will be hitting the market, according to reports, as early as May, though have your compulsory grain of salt handy. Sources indicate a price range of around $199-$249, which should put it right there with the Amazon Kindle Fire. According to industry sources, the Google-Asus co-branded tablet will also be the first to use the new Google Play Store.
