You can already get Angry Birds Rio, the latest incarnation of Rovio’s mega-hit, for Android and iOS, with Symbian and webOS editions coming early next month. So far, for Android, Amazon’s had an exclusive on the title, helping it kick off its new Amazon Appstore. That arrangement won’t last for long, though, as Rovio’s revealed that the free, ad-supported version of the game will be coming to the standard Android Market sometime later this week.
This is great news for users of AT&T smartphones, as the carrier has yet to deliver on its promise to give its users access to Amazon and other third-party app stores. For the moment, the prohibition on side-loading apps outside the Android Market keeps you from being able to use Amazon’s store.
The other group that’s been affected by the Amazon exclusivity, and likely the one that’s ultimately responsible for such a quick move to introduce Rio to the standard Market, is the global Android community. As the Amazon Appstore restricts sales to US customers, there’s been no way for them to legitimately get their hands on the latest Angry Birds.
As far as we can tell from the statements Rovio’s made, the ad-free paid version will continue to only be available through Amazon.
