App developers have learned that sometimes the best way to drive up revenue isn’t to increase app sales, but to offer more options for delayed earnings through in-app purchases. It’s worked so well with Apple’s App Store that the company recently took steps to prevent unauthorized purchasers from inadvertently racking up huge bills. We knew that an in-app billing platform was coming to Android soon, and now Google’s announced that the system is undergoing testing with plans for a public launch next week.
Developers have the next few days to fine-tune how their revamped apps perform with the new billing option. The APIs have been available for weeks, so you can bet that we’ll be seeing a lot of programs appear to take advantage of in-app payments once Google flips the switch next week. With the new competition from the Amazon Appstore, this timing looks perfect for drawing developer interest back over to the Android Market.
Google hasn’t revealed exactly when next week it will kick-off the program, so keep your eyes peeled for updates to your favorite apps.
