If you’ve already made the upgradeto the new Android Market app on your smartphone, you’ve no doubt noticed the new placement of books and movies for sale in the store. Is that going to be it, or might Google look to expand the scope of the Android Market even further, with yet more different type of merchandise for sale? Looking at the app’s resources it seems that might be a distinct possibility, with signs pointing yet again to Google starting-up a music sales service.
Buried in the new Android Market APK, you’ll find graphics resources including the little color-coded shopping bag icons used to depict different sections of the Market. Alongside the icons already employed by the app, there’s also an orange one , clearly labeled as belonging to the music category.
It seemed that with the release of Google Music beta as a cloud-based music locker, one made without the consent of record labels, Google had decided to stay out of the music sales game. These files in the new Market suggest we shouldn’t be so hasty to rush to judgment, and that Google may still be at work trying to work negotiations out. Either it expects to kick-off music sales in the near future, or it’s just future-proofing the app on the off chance it’s able to work out the licensing sometime further down the road.
