Following the recent Android Market overhaul, Google is continuing to push out some additional updates, as it’s added extra app categories and the ability for AT&T users to bill purchases to their mobile accounts.
The category refresh adds Sports to available game types, and does a dozen-odd changes to the list of different app flavors. Gone is Multimedia, replaced by the more specific Music & Audio and Media & Video. All-new categories include Education, Medical, Photography, and Transportation. While it’s counter-productive to get TOO specific when creating a bunch of new categories, Google’s changes feel like they add specificity without getting into too narrow a niche.
AT&T users can now join those of T-Mobile as able to pay for apps directly through their mobile provider. Direct Carrier Billing, as its called, will let you see exactly how much you’re shelling out for your smartphone experience all on one bill; whether you see that as a convenience or are dreading the coming sticker-shock is is certainly going to depend on your usage habits.
Google also said that it intends to try to bring Direct Carrier Billing to users on other carriers in the future.
