If we’re to believe the rumors, the next iteration of Android, codenamed “Gingerbread” could be hitting the public as early as next week. According to the source, the Gingerbread SDK — the package that developers use to code against — may be released sooner than we thought.

We still don’t know what’s in it, nor what “version” of Android this is (2.2, 2.5, 3.0, 42, etc.), and no carriers or manufacturers have made comments about any upcoming handsets they plan to run Gingerbread on.

Additionally, the release of the SDK typically doesn’t happen at the same time the source code is released to the AOSP (that usually happens several weeks later). As soon as it’s in the AOSP custom ROMs (such as CyanogenMod) can start being developed and released for various handsets.
