All the way back in November of last year, Acer showed off an Android smartphone with a large, oddly-shaped 4.8-inch 1024 x 480 display. Later on, the company officially launched the device, calling it the Iconia Smart. We were expecting the phone to have finally gone up for sale months ago, but it has yet to materialize. A recent update on Acer’s German Facebook page now gives us a better idea for when it might actually show up, as well as what you could expect to pay for it.

Acer Germany says that the Iconia Smart will be out sometime around the middle of September, and will sell for the equivalent of about $730. That information only specifically applies to the phone’s German release, but there’s no reason to expect it wouldn’t be available elsewhere in Europe in the same timeframe.

If you’re a movie buff, the Iconia Smart’s 21:9 aspect ratio screen will give you something closer to a CinemaScope-sized display, at least more so than WVGA or FWVGA Androids. That’s bound to win the smartphone a few fans, and there’s some other solid hardware specs here, like an eight-megapixel main camera, but it’s hard to get around the fact that this is year-old hardware. The phone’s single-core 1GHz Snapdragon means it should be a decent performer, but it would have been nice to see Acer think about swapping in some more modern components to help start the Iconia Smart off on a high note.
