Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 joins public Android Oreo beta testing club in China

Xiaomi might be busy plotting its long overdue expansion to US carriers, as well as a high-profile collaboration with Microsoft and Qualcomm on one of those Windows 10 “Always Connected” PCs, but that doesn’t mean software support for existing Android phones is being neglected.

Far from it, in fact, as the eye-catching Mi MIX 2 follows the slightly older high-end Mi 6 and the mid-range Mi A1 on the increasingly crowded Android Oreo beta train. Unfortunately, Xiaomi is yet to provide a finished, fully polished OTA update for any of the company’s handsets, although sooner or later, we’ll definitely get there.

For the time being, owners of the second-generation “full screen” smartphone in China can sign up to sample 8.0 software goodies while they’re being developed and optimized, with no words on whether or not the public beta program could also extend to markets like India or Spain in the near future.

This is yet another sign the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is viewed as less of an experiment than its predecessor, so maybe, just maybe we can dare to dream of impending US availability. Of course, supply remains tight in the handful of regions the thin-bezeled 6-incher has so far seen daylight in, which is hardly encouraging.
