A not-so-much all-glass iPhone 8, as sold by KGI

Good news for Apple: everyone has gone bananas for the pricier, fancier Jet Black finish on that new iPhone 7. The bad news? It can’t make enough of those things to ship to everyone quick enough.

So, if rumors of an all-glass iPhone next year come to bear, will Apple step up to meet the demand — if there is any? We’ve got plenty of questions to mull over and twelve whole months to do so, but let’s start with more about the all-glass design for what may be the iPhone 8 next year.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has another research note out today. AppleInsider reports that just as Apple has limited the new Jet Black option to the 128GB and 256GB storage options of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the company may go in the same direction again next year.

Part of that may relate to the desire to achieve an all-glass chassis for the iPhone 8. Kuo believes that there won’t be enough R&D progress to make such a phone structurally sound.

“[A] metal frame surrounding the edge is necessary for reinforced structure design,” Kuo stated. “As stainless steel has a better look than aluminum and costs more, we expect only high-end new iPhone models to come with a stainless steel frame next year.”

Unlike this year’s easily marked Jet Black finish, though, the all-glass design will be just as glossy while being more resistant to scratches.

Kuo also rumors that the mostly glass build will be on both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus next year, contradicting the notion that just the Plus models would be getting it. We also may expect an edge-to-edge OLED display that will completely cover the face of certain, if not all iPhones. The home button, earpiece and the FaceTime camera might actually be tucked beneath the screen.

Just what kind of research has Kuo and KGI been up to? We don’t know. The firm has called plenty of shots correctly, though it missed on a few major ones before. We’d like to see if these rumors make it past the spring, though.
