It’s macOS Sierra release day

As promised, macOS Sierra 10.12 is rolling out today. We won’t go into the feature load in this article, but we do have coverage here and here.

The update is available to the following oldest and newer models:

  • MacBook model year 2009
  • MacBook Pro mid-2010
  • MacBook Air late 2010
  • Mac mini mid-2010
  • iMac late 2009
  • Mac Pro mid-2010

You’ll need 2GB of RAM and at least 8.8GB of available storage to download and install the package. Features like Handoff, Instant Hotspot, Universal Clipboard and Apple Pay on the web will need the following hardware or newer:

  • MacBook (early 2015 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
  • Mac mini (2012 or newer)
  • iMac (2012 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (late 2013)

Auto Unlock, wherein your Mac is kept unlocked by the proximity of your Apple Watch and iPhone, requires an watchOS 3 and an iPhone 5 or later connected to a Mac device from mid-2013 or later. Apple Pay on the web, where you can verify online payments with Touch ID on a connected iPhone, needs an iPhone 6 or later running iOS 10 or an Apple Watch on watchOS 3.

Phone calling requires an carrier-active iPhone with iOS 8 or later while SMS needs iOS 8.1 or later.
